I have spent the last couple of weeks thinking about the development roadmap for the AI Powered Chatbot for WordPress plugin. Over the last ten years of my career in sales and customer service, I’ve managed several different live chat solutions. My plugin is not live chat, it’s a chatbot. What’s the difference between them?

Most enterprise chat platforms have structured if-then-else architectures designed to guide the conversation towards certain goals, usually a sales goal. If the chat platform asked you for your email address or your phone number, but you answer with a string of words describing what you’re looking for, you could find yourself in a chat loop that’s difficult to escape.
The power of the Large Language Models (LLMs) developed by OpenAI and other companies has changed how we can interact with chat in an environment that is non-procedural, i.e., interactions are unstructured and more akin to interacting with a person.
Remember the Turing Test?
The Turing Test, proposed by Alan Turing in 1950, is a measure of a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human. It involves a human evaluator conversing with both a human and a machine, and if the evaluator cannot reliably tell the machine from the human, the machine is said to have passed the test.
Artificial General Intelligence is on the horizon.
When sailing in the Atlantic offshore and you start to approach land, there will be signs that you’re getting close. You may not be able to see the shoreline just yet, but you’ll see birds in the sky, a low flying airplane, perhaps some light pollution if it’s a nighttime landfall. All this happens long before land is visible on the horizon.
You see, the curvature of the Earth limits the distance over which sailors can see land or other objects while at sea. As land becomes visible or disappears over the horizon, your ship is either moving towards or away from land or other objects.
Just as sailors use the curvature of the Earth to navigate and understand their position relative to distant landmarks, researchers in the field of artificial intelligence use current advancements and challenges as markers to gauge how close we are to achieving general artificial intelligence, navigating through a vast sea of technological possibilities and unknowns.

Building a GPT Assistant is very easy. Provide some general instructions to the assistant. Upload files that contain relevant knowledge. When you upload documents to an OpenAI Assistant, the Assistant uses the content of these documents to understand and respond to specific questions or tasks related to those documents. The documents are not used for any other purposes and are not stored permanently; they are only accessed temporarily to assist with the immediate query.
So, what’s on the horizon for Q1 2024?
The Q1 2024 roadmap for the AI Powered Chatbot for WordPress plugin will focus on expanding the capabilities of GPT Assistants, enhancing performance, and incorporating user interface settings for advanced personalization options.
Just before the end of 2023 there were several enhancements that set the stage for Q1 2024.
The first enhancement was to allow for virtually unlimited GPT Assistants. The enhancement allows invoking a specific GPT Assistant on demand. Wherever you can place a shortcode (on a page, in a post, or in a widget), you can make a call to a specific GPT Assistant.
The second enhancement was GPT Assistant performance improvement. The enhancement greatly speeded up the response time. It’s still limited by how fast OpenAI’s servers are running, but the plugin is checking for an API response 10X more frequently that when initially introduced.
Conversation Logging was introduced at the very beginning of this year. Session activity by a chatter and the chatbot response are logged in a secure database. Capturing both visitors and logged in users’ engagement with the chatbot is likely to yield a treasure trove of information.
Uploading files to GPT Assistants will be the next major advancement in functionality. This is an open request from the community. There are several decisions that need to be made around file handling, retention, and deletion. As soon as that is resolved, uploading files to an assistant will be a reality.
